High Peak

Canal Architectural worked closely with James Darwent Architecture to design and manufacture a bespoke curved cantilevered  staircase for a property in the Peak District. The mild steel staircase structure incorporated 16 timber treads with 20mm spindles and handrail, incorporating an all wax finish. A handrail was added to the staircase in American White Oak as part of a safety and architectural feature. The final result was a minimalist staircase structure that blended perfectly with the contemporary and rustic elements of the property.

The talented project management team at Canal worked closely with NAW Reynolds Building Limited to install the bespoke staircase in line with current building regulations Working closely with the client and on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery and seamless final result.

Upper Cheyne

Canal Architectural were approached by Adam Row’s Construction to manufacture a contemporary floating staircase for a luxury property in the Chelsea area. Canal manufactured a cantilever staircase with 15 timber treads, glass balustrades and brass handrails. The modern structure featured glass fixings with on trend patinated brass cappings. For a final touch strips of lights were added underneath the treads to brighten the structure and for an artistic finish. In addition Canal Architectural supplied the glass balustrade to the basement stair as well as a cantilever stair to the external access area. The final result was an exquisite, contemporary structure that blended perfectly with the urban surroundings.

Mark Hailey from Adams Row Construction commented “The works carried out by Canal on Upper Cheyne Row is seamless. As far as I’m concerned Canal have produced a good, aesthetically pleasing product that is the focal point of the property. The staircase design called on a lot of setting out to achieve the clients love and appreciation of symmetry, we only achieved this by collaborating with Canal and Mark to work out the detail down to a millimetre. Your aftercare service for a better word cannot be faulted”

The talented project management team at Canal worked closely with the contractor Adam’s Row Construction to ensure the staircase was fitted in compliance with the latest UK staircase building regulations.

Woodlawn

Canal Architectural were approached to manufacture a cantilever staircase as well as a bespoke internal balcony for a luxury residential property in Staffordshire.

The property owner worked closely with the Canal team to design a floating staircase for the two story bedroom. The structure was manufactured in mild steel with 13 timber treads added in White American Oak. Toughened laminated glass was added to the stair balustrade with a modern, brushed stainless steel handrail fitted. Lights along with a mood setting device were installed underneath the treads to achieve an artistic and creative finish. The final result was a simple ‘floating’ staircase structure that blended perfectly with the contemporary features of the property.

The homeowner also specified an upper internal balcony for another bedroom within the property. Steel box sections were added and manufactured in mild steel with glass infill panels incorporated into the design. The talented in-house project management team at Canal worked closely with the on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery and installation in line with current UK building regulations.

The Stables

Canal were approached to manufacture a bespoke, straight staircase for a residential property in Kent. The architect wanted to allow as much light in as possible to permeate throughout the property which meant incorporating extensive amounts of glass into the design. The specification required a contemporary steel staircase structure with glass balustrades and treads. The structure and handrails were manufactured in stainless steel and a satin polish finish was applied to provide a brushed appearance. Pig nose fixings were applied to the glass and stringer, which married up the initial welded fixings and held the glass panels in place.

The glass added a fascinating, reflective and visual look to to the structural centrepiece of the property. The final result was an elegant, staircase structure that complemented the interior of the contemporary property.

What are balustrades?

What is a balustrade? Balustrades are rows of small columns below a railing commonly used for staircases and balconies. Historically they play a common part in architecture featuring most predominately being revived during the Italian Renaissance period.  Traditionally made from stone, in the modern age balustrades can be made from laser cut metals, glass or…

Yew Tree

Canal Architectural were approached to design a bespoke staircase for the homeowner of a luxury apartment in the Liverpool area. The property owner worked closely with the Canal technical sales team to design a contemporary staircase that provided access to the upper balcony area of the apartment.

The final result was the design and supply of a Cantilever staircase for a striking and modern solution. The intelligent piece of engineering anchored in at only one end, allowing the the protruding construction to overhang. The design created more space within the property and laminated glass was applied to the balustrade to withstand imposed loads. Obscured glass was added to the top landing area for a modesty solution. Finally, dark stained oak treads were added to the Cantilever structure in line with latest design trends of natural and urban finishes.

The property owner commented: “My architect mentioned Canal Engineering who I may like to consider for the bespoke stairs I needed for my apartment. On the first call I knew right away this was the right company. Their true professionalism was evident from the start with a ‘can do’ attitude, nothing of the clients wishes was too much for the team. From the design stage through to the install stage, I was kept informed and updated by call and by email. Once approved the works began on site with a great dedicated team who worked tirelessly throughout to meet a tight timescale. A special mention to Lee Hunt for his design input and for persevering with a ‘difficult client’ ; to Ricky the project manager who was always there and put everything into this project to make it work and finally the on site team with Richard at the helm who was brilliant and his eye for perfection created what is a magnificent staircase…. if I may say”

Our talented in-house project management team worked closely with the on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery and the staircase was fitted in compliance with current UK Building regulations.

Ellerdale

Canal were approached to design a staircase and glass walkway for a private property in North London. The specification required the staircase and glass walkway to connect the existing structure to the new extension and rear garden. Canal worked closely with the architect to develop a contemporary staircase with glass treads and balustrades to capture light and reflection within the property.

The project was finished with an on-site wet spray finish and joints were seamslessly filled to make the staircase look like a single structure offset from the walls. The final aesthetic was an elegant, contemporary staircase that captured the natural light and the modern features of the property.

Put Shack

This central London based spacious office boasts a rustic-looking, mild steel staircase with a 20mm thick water jet cut balustrade. The staircase is all self-colour, with a timber made handrail that adds to the industrial look and feel of the whole office.

The brief for this area was to create a very rustic look in order to reflect the company’s personality and to resonate with their clientele. It’s not often that you can create a staircase influenced by creativity, whilst maintaining a feeling of simplicity and emphasising the industrial look that the rest of the office embraces.

What are balustrades?

What is a balustrade? Balustrades are rows of small columns below a railing commonly used for staircases and balconies. Kentish Old Road

This beautiful quarter-landing staircase was installed at a Camden office in North West London. As part of the brief the client requested an industrial vintage staircase design that complemented the interior of the property.

The staircase and extensive walkway are both made of mild steel with a waxed finish including laser cut infill panels and timber handrail. The wax prevents the steel from rusting whilst maintaining its quality and character. The handrail is a White American oak square that has been stained in order to match the interior of this elegant corporate setting.

This particular staircase model is simplistic in its design but is made of a complex technical foundation along with a solid handrail which is used in a way to assist the structural integrity of the staircase.

In order to ensure that this staircase and walkway allows access to multiple offices, our talented team has installed the balustrade to the staircase along with 3mm sheets of laser cut steel which achieved a bespoke mesh effect for each balustrade panel. To tie it all together, a slotted White American oak square handrail was stained to match the interior of the property.

Our in-house installation experts work very closely with your on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery. We design each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.

Wedderburn

This elegant cantilever mild steel, site sprayed feature stair was designed by us to architects’ specifications, for a domestic setting in North London. Whilst simplistic in its design, the complex technical foundation along with a solid handrail is used in a way to assist the structural integrity of the staircase.

Our team designed and developed the fabrication and installation for this bespoke L-shaped staircase using black stained oak treads to assist with the support of the stair structure. One of the biggest advantages of L-shaped stairs is that they require less space and create a more seamless visual transition as they meander around corners.

We will work with you through the design and installation process to ensure this bespoke staircase meets your requirements and specifications. After our pre-build and client approval process that we have in place for each project, the staircase is dismantled, delivered and installed by our installation team.

Our talented in-house team works very closely with your on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery. We design each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.

Modus Crai

This elegant L-shaped Winder staircase was designed by ourselves to architects’ specifications, for a high end office space in central London. Winder staircases are a variation of an L-shaped staircase but instead of a flat landing, the staircase has triangular steps at the corner transition.

The minimalistic design of the staircase complements the surrounding interior features whilst the intertwined shape of the staircase creates the illusion of available space in an awkward physical location on the eighth floor.

The all exposed steelwork which is painted matte black, along with the timber box treads, the double spine supporting structure and the glass balustrade panels, all work together to give the staircase an industrial feel whilst creating a spacious office environment.

Modus Crai is a truly unique staircase model that is both practical and elegant in its design, made of a complex technical foundation accompanied by a solid handrail which is used in a way to assist the structural integrity of the staircase.

Our talented in-house installation team works very closely with your on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery. We design each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.

Phipp

This fabulous straight Feature stair and Glass Bridge is located in a spacious office in the heart of London. The all mild steel structure accentuates the urban feel of this commercial setting, whilst the laser cut risers which come complete with brass nosing inserts add to the contemporary appearance of the interior.

The glass balustrade increases light flow whilst giving the stairs a clear and simple appearance. The lamination of the glass creates a thickness which makes the stairs more secure and meets building regulations.

The brief was to replace the existing staircase and balustrade with a new, contemporary feature staircase that would complement a commercial setting. The combination of mild steel and an all waxed finish really reflects the company’s high-end image.

Additionally, this specific staircase model is simplistic in its design but is made of a complex technical foundation along with a solid handrail which is used in a way to assist the structural integrity of the staircase.

Our talented in-house installation team works very closely with your on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery. We design each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.

Glebe

Taking luxury along with practicality to the next level, this mild steel staircase accompanied by a stylish glass balustrade is located in a lovely two-storey home in Knightsbridge. We designed and developed the fabrication and installation for this bespoke U-shaped staircase using full height laminated glass to assist with the support of the stair structure. The handrail is constructed with mesh to one side and timber finish to the other.

The cream coloured wooden steps complement the contrast of the interior with the natural light bouncing off of the gentle tones. Additionally, in order to enhance the natural light flow inside the home, full height panels of glass were used along with steel fixing connecting the glass to the staircase.

Glebe staircases have plenty of benefits, the biggest one being that they can transform the essence of space whilst creating an atmosphere of luxury and cosiness. There is a wide range of Glebe staircase styles that you can choose from, available with an extensive assortment of building materials.

Our talented in-house installation team will work very closely with your on-site contractors to ensure a seamless delivery. We design each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.

Alltech

Canal designed and installed an impressive steel and glass feature staircase for a commercial setting. This bespoke design comprised four joint-free, smooth helical staircases, connected by an intermediate landing fabricated from reinforced concrete.

Canal’s design team reviewed the initial intent drawings before developing the technical design using Autodesk Inventor. The individual staircases were fabricated and prebuilt in our Nottingham workshop, where they were inspected and approved by the client.

Following approval, the staircases were dismantled before being delivered and installed by our in-house installation team, working closely with on-site contractors to ensure a smooth operation.

The staircases featured 12mm stainless steel helical stringers finished in a satin polish with 41.5mm low-iron glass treads. The glass balustrade, at 21.5mm tick, was finished with a 42mm slotted stainless handrail, improving safety without compromising on style.

The final result was an amazing space dominated by a contemporary feature staircase comprising of functionality with sleek design.

The Canal Team designed each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.
