We wish to reassure our customers we remain fully open. Canal Engineering are committed to ensure all projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard. We continue to follow all relevant official guidance, with measures in place to protect our employees, suppliers and customers.

University of Surrey

The University of Surrey recently refurbished their student service centre to modernise the existing, traditional structure. The architect wanted to incorporate a contemporary, visual look to the external space by adding perforated mesh panels to the length of the building. Canal manufactured the bespoke panels in aluminium to provide protection against rust and they were powder coated in RAL colour 9003 (signal white) to provide a more attractive and durable finish.

The talented project team at Canal worked closely with the contractor to ensure a smooth delivery and fitting of the panels, working in line with latest health and safety regulations.

Gallagher

Canopy

The project was to manufacture and install a large feature canopy for a brand new retail park in Bristol.

The steel and glass canopy runs the whole length of the building which is 220 metres long.

The glass canopy support structure was made from tubular steel, fabricated to create a wave feature along the leading edge.

The steel in the canopy is illuminated with blue neon lights to complement the stainless steel sculptures that feature at the top of the signage which are also laced with blue neon lights.

Sign

The project was to manufacture and install feature entrance signs for a brand new retail park.

The painted metal entrance signs stood out from the building and were over 16 metres tall; the face of each sign was around 40m².

The sign firstly began constructed in sections at the works factory in Nottingham. Secondly they were then assembled on the ground and hoisted into place with the aid of a crane.

To complement the signage, each one had a sculpture fabricated in stainless steel placed on top to add further impact to and highlight the entrances.

Friars

This steel canopy was manufactured from Cor-Ten steel, which is a group of steel alloys developed to eliminate the need for painting producing a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years.

The irregular shaped steel panels were laser cut; an upstand was formed to follow the front edge and this was welded on.

Upstands were also formed and welded on around the holes; to prevent water running through when it rains!

Next

Canal Architectural has produced many bespoke canopy projects and retail park architectural structures in the past. When it came to producing a exterior canopy for one of the Next stores, Canal was ready for the challenge.

In the workshop the fabrication began to manufacture the steel canopy structure before installation to reduce the disruption time.

The Canal installation team fabricated a glass and steel canopy feature which spans across the entire exterior of the building. The mild steel construction has a white powder coat finish creating a smart and clean feel.

In addition, 17.5mm glass panels compliments the large window displays as well as providing structural requirements for all weather conditions.

Riverside

The Riverside Retail Park recently required a new metal signage as part of the face lift within the retail outlet. Canal installed a new free standing metal signage feature to place the existing ones mounted on the buildings.

With varying sizes up to  64m² a range of things needed to be carefully calculated. This includes section sizes, fixing details and concrete foundations so they are able to withstand wind loadings.

Over two consecutive nights, the Canal team carried out the installation of the bespoke signage.  As well as avoiding any disruption to trading hours, the team also managed to install the signage within record time.

The complete project including the erection of the steel framework, the fixing of exterior cladding and the installation of illuminated signage now creates a fresh, modern, bold appearance for each retail store front.

In Need Of Bespoke Signage?

Canal can fabricate a wide range of signage designs for retail outlets to shopping centers and office buildings.  Large scale signage projects usually require planning permission as well as clever engineering.

We will work with you and your architect to recommend and effective method to achieve the final results you are looking for.

Crawley

Canal carried out a structural analysis of a concept drawing to determine the detail of section sizes and fixings required to manufacture this 10 metre span mild steel canopy.

By taking into account weather conditions including snow and wind loads; laminated 13.5mm glass was the ideal material. Canal were able to fabricate, powder coat as well as deliver this canopy in full length sections to its location.

In addition to minimise the disruption and maximise safety, the Canal team carried out the installation throughout the night.

Walkabout

Canal has made a number of these exterior signs for the Walkabout bars around the country. This particular projects highlights the Nottingham Location.

In the Nottingham workshop, Canal manufacture the sign frames from stainless steel tube. The tubes are then rolled and welded into a surfboard shape to match the company’s branding.

Watch Canal Architectural in the workshop

Once assembled, the steel tubes were heat treated with an oxy-acetylene torch to give the exterior signage a patchy blue distressed look.
