Woodlawn

Canal Architectural were approached to manufacture a cantilever staircase as well as a bespoke internal balcony for a luxury residential property in Staffordshire.

The property owner worked closely with the Canal team to design a floating staircase for the two story bedroom. The structure was manufactured in mild steel with 13 timber treads added in White American Oak. Toughened laminated glass was added to the stair balustrade with a modern, brushed stainless steel handrail fitted. Lights along with a mood setting device were installed underneath the treads to achieve an artistic and creative finish. The final result was a simple ‘floating’ staircase structure that blended perfectly with the contemporary features of the property.

The homeowner also specified an upper internal balcony for another bedroom within the property. Steel box sections were added and manufactured in mild steel with glass infill panels incorporated into the design. The talented in-house project management team at Canal worked closely with the on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery and installation in line with current UK building regulations.

The Stables

Canal were approached to manufacture a bespoke, straight staircase for a residential property in Kent. The architect wanted to allow as much light in as possible to permeate throughout the property which meant incorporating extensive amounts of glass into the design. The specification required a contemporary steel staircase structure with glass balustrades and treads. The structure and handrails were manufactured in stainless steel and a satin polish finish was applied to provide a brushed appearance. Pig nose fixings were applied to the glass and stringer, which married up the initial welded fixings and held the glass panels in place.

The glass added a fascinating, reflective and visual look to to the structural centrepiece of the property. The final result was an elegant, staircase structure that complemented the interior of the contemporary property.

Infosys

The client approached Canal Architectural to design metal balustrades for a commercial office space in Nottingham for an IT technology company. The client originally requested standard mesh panels for the internal space at the front of the building. The Canal team offered a stronger, contemporary solution to fulfill the initial specifications and meet with structural calculations. The site installation team installed an open grid flooring for the infill panels in compliance with British Standards.

The balustrades were completed with a powder coated finish and blended perfectly with the light installations in the atrium. The team at Canal Architectural worked  with the on-site contractors to ensure perfect assembly and smooth delivery.

Put Shack

This central London based spacious office boasts a rustic-looking, mild steel staircase with a 20mm thick water jet cut balustrade. The staircase is all self-colour, with a timber made handrail that adds to the industrial look and feel of the whole office.

The brief for this area was to create a very rustic look in order to reflect the company’s personality and to resonate with their clientele. It’s not often that you can create a staircase influenced by creativity, whilst maintaining a feeling of simplicity and emphasising the industrial look that the rest of the office embraces.

We will work with you through the design and installation process to ensure this bespoke staircase meets your requirements and specifications. After our pre-build and client approval process that we have in place for each project, the staircase is dismantled, delivered and installed by our in-house installation team.

Our talented in-house team works very closely with your on-site contractors to ensure a smooth delivery. We design each staircase to comply with BS5395: Part 2, 1984 (spiral and helical staircases) and Building Regulations: Approved Document K.

New Walk Museum

The New Walk Museum and Art Gallery in Leicester had recently been refurbished. The museum originally opened in 1849 as one of the first Public museums in England. The historic art gallery required a new feature commercial helical staircase to create an eye catching dramatic entrance.

At Canal’s manufacturing facility, we created this unique ‘Ammonite’ shaped helical staircase. The balustrading is also fabricated from mild steel which is rolled to achieve a seamless, constantly changing curve.

The on site the Canal Team wet sprayed the helical staircase a bright white to match the existing surrounding interior of the museum. Beautiful custom made timber oak treads also reflect the designers intent to create an ‘Ammonite’ shape which perfectly work in contrast with the white features of the bespoke stair.

Canal Architectural also focused on the small intricate details of the public staircase featuring a satin polished nosing strip within each tread alongside matching side fixed handrail.

What is really impressive about this feature staircase is the hidden structural elements that help create this apparently ‘free standing’ structure.

Cadogan Lane

This beautiful London home required a new feature staircase and balustrading that blended perfectly with the light and airy décor. Canal fabricated a large straight staircase with hidden steel work at the upper gantry to achieve an elegant floating effect.

In workshop, Canal began the fabricating the mild steel staircase structure as well as the timber treads on to of a 6mm press tread. In addition, to hide any visible fixings, ash timber treads are sleeve over the steel structure creating a seamless finish.

Canal fabricate the laser cut balustrades from a 6mm mild steel sheet to achieve the plaited lace effect. On site the installation spray the staircase structure white to seamlessly match the client’s interior.

To finish, the laser cut balustrades is topped with a mild steel handrail with a white leather clad finish.

Laser cut balustrades allow you to be creative and imaginative with your designs. Canal can fabricate almost any pattern into the balustrading, from organic patterns such a leaves and branches as well as modern geometric patterns.

At Canal we ensure that all laser cut balustrades comply with all Building Control requirements which results in a thickness of either 12 or 15mm.

Canal Engineering

At Canal Engineering’s Nottingham Office recently underwent a refurbishment within the reception area. This was the perfect reason to install one of their own bespoke cantilevered staircase.

The first fix involved embedding a structural steel stringer into the wall with protruding, welded steel cantilever channels.

Canal then plasters the structural wall to hide the work which creates the seamless floating illusion. Next, custom made timber oak treads with stainless steel nosing strips cover the steel channels, bringing the staircase together.

The second fix involved a 21.5mm glass balustrade installed onto the staircase. Following the second fix involved a 21.5mm glass balustrade installed onto the staircase. The second fix involved a 21.5mm glass balustrade installed onto the staircase. To hide any balustrade fixings, Canal install timber end caps at the end of each tread. This technique allows the grain of the timber flow through the glass.

In addition a side fixed leather stainless steel handrail adds the perfect finishing touch.

To take a step further, Canal also created a feature wall piece made from a large piece mild steel. As well as custom lighting for the backdrop, small laser cut rectangles create a modern contemporary look.  The steel is then finished with a wax coating to maintain the natural appearance of the material.
