Bespoke Balustrades for Commercial & Residential

From making the most of stunning views on residential balconies and terraces to creating spacious and welcoming environments in commercial offices, bespoke balustrades can provide the essential finish to any interior and exterior property.

In the heart of London, companies are expanding and developing their offices to fit their high end brand by creating a place not just to work but also to entertain their valued clients. Instead of a low budget refurbishment, many companies are investing in greater interiors, features and furniture to boost their company image.

The use of glass balustrade has become popular due to its contemporary appearance. Once installed, glass can visually suggest a sense of increased space and open plan living, where natural and interior lighting can travel through the crystal clear panels. In turn, this creates a brighter environment, which is ideal for both offices and home interiors.

Similarly, polished metal balusters and fixings catch the light and reflect it around the room providing a secondary light source. More frequent in residential homes, a baluster design can complement existing features around a home or create a brand new, unique style that can be built upon.

The design of a property is not just concentrating on the interior, it is also evolving the exterior to deliver an appearance that is aesthetically pleasing. In the same way glass balustrade provides a sense of space inside, it also does outside. By using low iron glass balustrade a property can ensure the views off of its balcony or terrace is uninterrupted.

Once chosen, a balustrade can be enhanced with the choice of handrail finish and positioning. Now in 2015, the popular materials including brass, stainless steel, walnut timber, leathers and other animal skins are becoming increasingly more fashionable within interior design. These mentioned materials are very good at complementing raw materials and surfaces such as concrete and rusted steels. Trendy bars, restaurants, offices, retail stores and even residential homes are displaying this new raw interior style. The most common example being Urban Outfitters.

With experience working in both commercial and residential environments, CANAL Architectural manufactures feature staircases, bespoke balustrades and handrails, which is installed throughout the UK and abroad by their own installation teams.

CANAL has various product examples and an extensive materials collection in their East Central London Showroom, enabling a tailored service built around you.

Nestled in the heart of London, Parliament View apartments offer uncompromising views across the capital towards the Houses of Parliament. The client approached Canal Architectural to install a bespoke luxury spiral staircase to enhance their surroundings.

Canal were enlisted to open up and expand the upper floor of this penthouse apartment as well as creating an elegant access solution. In order to create an open area on the upper floor of the apartment, Canal fabricated and installed a new steel structure, providing support for an extended mezzanine landing as well as a surface to affix seamless low-iron glass balustrades to, maximising the flow of light through the space.

The client was keen to make a feature spiral staircase as well as the design being space efficient. Glass spiral staircases provide an elegant connection between floors and do not take up unnecessary space.

Canal fabricated a solid stainless steel ribbon stringer, creating support on one side of the staircase as well as incorporating the new curved low-iron glass balustrade.

A stainless steel central column was also fabricated to provide support on the other side of the staircase and polished to a seamless satin finish to match the other finishing on the staircase.

Triple laminated low-iron glass treads with bespoke etching were installed to match the balustrades and allow light to flow. A satin polished slotted stainless steel handrail was installed to complement the surroundings and provide a stylish and safe solution.

The focus of the footbridge is a central concrete pillar with four suspension cables supporting the structure. This bridge forms a central part of the Aylesbury Hub project.

Bourg Walk was nominated and won the Engineering Excellence Award 2009 awarded by the Institution of Civil Engineers – South East England branch.

Canal Architectural produced 20mm thick stainless steel balusters 316 satin polished, with a 320 grit finish for the Bourg Walk Bridge. Canal also supplied an elliptical aluminium handrail, which was extruded by others.

To complete the balustrade, Gladstone PC 100/10 mesh was used in between each baluster, which was supplied by another company that supply architectural mesh.

Bespoke Bridge: Liffey

The Liffey Bridge is another project that Canal Architectural has completed work on.

The Liffey River, which flows through the centre of Dublin, supplies much of Dublin’s water, and a range of recreational opportunities.

The opportunity for Canal to be apart of the bespoke bridge creation over the Liffey river was an opening to show everyone the capabilities the Canal Architectural team has to offer.

The main structure of the bridge was constructed by others, while the Canal Architectural manufacturing team started construction of the stainless steel light boxes and elliptical handrail, which started the construction of the balustrade.

The elliptical handrail, 120mm x 60mm, was a unique feature, which was requested in a shot peened finish. To complete the balustrade, sections of mesh were bolted to each baluster above the individual light box features.

With the store covering a huge 4,600 square metres it was up to Canal to produce a helical staircase with style and distinction for the centre-piece.

The architect for the job David Taylor of AAVA Ltd was very pleased with the outcome stating;

“Thank you for your input on the Hugo Boss store; it was a tight schedule to produce such a complex stair. It looks excellent. Well done.”

Andrew Paxton, the Director at Newman Scott Ltd, echoed David’s comment and added,

“You did a great job and a great service.”

The Manufacture & Installation Of The Commercial Helical Stair

Fabricating the double-stringer, steel staircase in the workshop, the Canal team was able to perfect the elegant shape required.

When fully assembled on site, toughened, laminated, low iron glass was added; 17.5mm to form the balustrade for the staircase and 21.5mm for the first floor balustrade; all complemented with a black powder coated, slotted steel handrail.

Finishing touches included stone treads with stainless steel inserts for a nosing detail and a plaster boarded soffit finished in a matt black paint.
