Spiral staircases have become increasingly popular in modern homes today. A spiral stair has become well renowned for its space saving qualities of being able to move from one floor to another in such a small space.

Throughout history spiral staircases were built for many reasons, such as in medieval times spiral staircases were built often within castles to reach the top of the tower.

Spiral staircases have made a stamp throughout history such as the Loretto Chapel ‘miraculous’ Staircase built in 1877 and the Vatican Museum spiral staircase built in  Rome 1932 which is one of the most photographed staircases in the world.

Since then the concept of design has developed tremendously as well as the materials we use, because of this spiral stairs have become a visually compelling piece of architectural intelligence.

Canal have over 25 years’ experience and over this time have completed a wide range of spiral stairs to suit a range of different environments. Here are some of our most inspiring spiral staircases.

St John’s Wood, London

luxury bespoke spiral staircase

This spiral staircase and luxury London apartment was a match made in heaven. The dark stained oak timber treads naturally matched the interior of the property. Whilst satin polished central column and curved handrail tied in the contemporary finish alongside the glass panels.

This spiral stair adds a sense of mystery within the apartment as no clue reveals as to what is upstairs until you walk up.

Republic, Leeds

Spiral staircases do not have to specifically be designed for small spaces or just within residential properties. Republic, Leeds is the perfect example of this, Canal was challenged to fabricate a large spiral staircase of 12 meters tall over three levels!

Timber treads and landings had anti slip inserts where installed to increase safety underfoot within store. In addition, the underside was painted white including the central column giving the store the freedom to add directions or notes to customers.

Mole Hill, London
